Hanoi will host its second Viet Pride from August 2to August 4, featuring a bicycle rally, multiple movie screenings, panel discussions, workshops and a happy hour event. The first Viet Pride in August 2012 marked a historic landmark toward acceptance in a country with long history of animus toward the LGBT community.
Viet Pride 2012 attracted over 500 people for both indoor events and the bicycle rally, with support from a wide range of NGOs, the United Nations in Vietnam, foreign embassies and the Goethe Institute, with media coverage in major international news agencies – AFP, DPA, AP, Reuters and BBC.
Continuing the success from Viet Pride 2012, Viet Pride 2013 will provide scholarships to disadvantaged LGBT youth to assist them with undergraduate education, vocation training or English language enrichment. Additionally, this year’s Pride will launch the “Say Yes to Employment Equality Campaign” to call for a safer and tolerant workshop environment for LGBT workers, and inform consumer’s buying decision. At the moment, the campaign aims to engage with multinational and local corporations in the business sector. According to Thanh Tam Nguyen, Viet Pride’s Project Director, the organizing team consulted HRC’s “Buyer’s Guide for Workplace Equality” and other corporate equality resources on the website to support the campaign.
