On Thursday Michigan's Governor Rick Snyder joined a growing coalition of voices calling for the inclusion of LGBT people in the state's civil rights protections. Joining Snyder in his announcement were the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Grand Rapids Area Chamber.
For decades, pro-equality forces in Michigan have worked to amend the state's existing civil rights law, the Elliot-Larsen Act, to include sexual orientation and gender identity. The efforts have gained momentum recently with the launch of the Michigan Competitive Workforce Coalition under the leadership of Jim Murray, President of AT&T Michigan. Others in the coalition include Chrysler Group LLC, Kellogg, Herman Miller, and Steelcase.
HRC has a long-standing partnership with activists on the ground in Michigan who are working tirelessly to see success before the end of the 2015 legislative session. The ACLU of Michigan, Equality Michigan and Unity Michigan are all deeply involved in the work and we are pleased to join them in this effort.
