France’s Constitutional Council today approved marriage equality legislation passed by parliament on April 23, rejecting a challenge to the legislation launched by the main opposition party.

President Francois Hollande, who campaigned on a pro-marriage equality platform, is expected to sign the bill into law in the coming days.

The victory follows news earlier this week in Brazil, where the National Council of Justice ruled that government notaries cannot deny marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
