Former college football star and professional athlete Kevin Grayson has publically come out as gay.
The 25-year-old is one of the most decorated football players to ever come out of Central Virginia, and has won championships at every level of competition, including professionally in the Italian Football League.
He said he had not previously come out because he did not want to take the focus away from the team and his sport. However, Grayson said he has received an outpouring of support from friends and family. He hopes his own coming out process will help others who struggle with their own coming out process.
“Just because you’re gay doesn’t mean you can’t be the athlete you want to be,” said Grayson in an interview with CBS 6. “Doesn’t mean you can’t be a star. Doesn’t mean you can’t go out there and go just as hard as anybody else, if not harder.”
As far as returning to the game, Grayson said he hopes to play again in a few years.

Just last week, Jason Collins forever changed the face of sports when he became the first active NBA player to come out as gay.

We applaud Grayson and other athletes who take the brave step of coming out publicly. The journey to come out is a deeply personal process. For more, visit HRC's Coming Out Center.
