Zions Bancorp. Amends Its Non-Discrimination Policy
May 3, 2010
On Friday, Utah-based Zions Bancorporation (NASDAQ: ZION) became the latest Fortune 1000-ranked company to amend its policies to prohibit discrimination based on both sexual orientation and gender identity. The reversal came after the company's board of directors staunchly opposed doing this in materials mailed to the company's shareholders on April 15. The HRC Foundation's Workplace Project works with several shareholder advocacy groups to identify and encourage employers to add both "sexual orientation" and "gender identity" to their equal employment opportunity policies. Most notably, we've worked with the New York City Comptroller (and this year, the New York State's Pension Funds) on a shareholder resolution with Exxon Mobil Corp (NYSE: XOM). We applaud the work of the New York City Comptroller and the work of Equality Utah to change the company's position, and hope we can add Zions Bancorp to the list of more than 80 businesses that support the passage of an inclusive federal ENDA.
