Zach Wahls to Address DNC

This post comes from HRC Communications Intern Nick Gumas:

LGBT rights activist Zach Wahls is scheduled to address the Democratic National Convention tomorrow night. The son of lesbian mothers, Wahls has made a national name for himself advocating for equal rights for the LGBT community. Most notably, a video of Wahls’ impassioned speech for marriage equality to the Iowa State House of Representatives was ranked the number one political video of 2011 by YouTube.

The appearance of Wahls is part of the larger theme of inclusion for the LGBT community from the DNC. Last night, participants of HRC’s Americans for Marriage Equality Campaign, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Newark Mayor Cory Booker, spoke to the convention. First Lady Michelle Obama also referenced marriage equality in her speech last night. Obama claimed that surely we could achieve the American Dream “if proud Americans can be who they are and boldly stand at the altar with who they love.”

Other prominent LGBT speakers for tomorrow night include Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin, who if elected this November to the Senate will become the upper chamber’s first openly gay member.
