YouTuber Chronicles “Life As a Gay Jock”
March 19, 2012 by Eric Cameron, Digital Media Coordinator
Scott Heggart is a self-described jock. The 21-year-old from Ottawa spent his childhood shuffling between sports, including football, basketball, softball and hockey.
From sixth grade on, he also knew he was gay.
Heggart came out to his family at age 15 but spent the next two years processing how he might tell his team in a public-yet-anonymous way – with daily posts to YouTube. His hundreds of videos have attracted more than half a million views, and the hugely positive response gave him the courage to finally tell his hockey teammates. (They’ve taken it very well.)
The Ottawa Citizen has published a full feature on Scott’s inspiring story. You can also learn more about the You Can Play project -- a pro-LGBT sports organization co-founded by Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke -- by clicking here.
