Would Harvey Milk be Proud?

Harvey Milk, 1978. Photo by Daniel Nicoletta via Wikimedia Commons Had legendary San Francisco City Supervisor Harvey Milk lived, today would have been his 79th birthday.  After serving as a Supervisor for 11 months, he was assasinated along with Mayor George Moscone in November of 1978. Chuck Wolfe, president and CEO of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund and Leadership Institute, asks an interseting question over at GayPolitics.com... On Harvey Milk Day 2009, would he be proud of us? Just in terms of openly LGBT public officials, I found this paragraph striking:

Harvey Milk was the fifth openly gay person elected to public office in America. Today, more than 440 out officials are serving at all levels of government, but five states still have no out elected officials whatsoever, and another 15 have no out state legislators. While that number-440-may seem impressive, a little perspective is in order; there are more than 500,000 elective offices throughout the United States.

We've come quite far yet the road ahead remains long.
