Win for Equality in Virginia

Post submitted by Jamie Lockhart, Virginia State Director, who has worked to elect HRC-endorsed candidates McAuliffe, Northam and Herring since August.
Yesterday Virginians voted and our HRC-endorsed candidates have prevailed in the races for Governor and Lieutenant Governor. And the Attorney General’s race is still too close to call!
As a life-long Virginian, I am so proud of my state and the work that our volunteers and staff did to make these victories possible. Over the last couple of months, we made over 60,000 phone calls and knocked on nearly 50,000 doors; An amazing feat.
Last night at the McAuliffe victory party, I was wearing one of our HRC “Virginia is for Lovers” stickers and was routinely asked, “Where can I get one of those?” Luckily, I still had a roll of stickers left and was able to share throughout the evening. One woman came up to me and said, “This is so amazing. Virginia has changed so much since I moved here.” She told me about how difficult it was for her to come out years ago and how appreciative she is of the work HRC does.
The victory celebration was even sweeter because so many of our HRC volunteers and D.C. steering committee members were able to attend. Wrapped in HRC T-shirts with McAuliffe placards in hand, HRC was well represented. And big cheers were heard throughout the ballroom when Terry McAuliffe reiterated his support for equality and that no one should be discriminated against based on whom they love.
Virginians can now look forward to a governor that will fight for equality and ensure Virginia is a welcoming commonwealth for all.
