Why We’re Winning: Week of September 3
September 7, 2012 by Dan Rafter, Online Campaigns Manager
- We’ve said it all week, and it can’t be stressed enough – what a historic week for LGBT people at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte! From a record-breaking number of LGBT delegates and participants, to a platform that embraces – among other things – full marriage equality and inclusive workplace protections, to dozens of speakers that addressed equality in their remarks – including the President and First Lady Michelle Obama. Check out HRC’s video capturing the best moments:
- HRC President Chad Griffin was in Charlotte for the convention. Earlier in the week, he appeared on MSNBC discussing marriage equality – and what the President’s endorsement of it means to LGBT youth – as well as what’s at stake in this election.
- The Chicago Police Department adopted a general order calling for more respectful treatment of transgender detainees. The new order requires officers to use preferred names and pronouns when dealing with detainees, and ensures a person’s gender identity can’t be used as an assumed cause for a crime.
- Expedia became the latest company to endorse marriage equality in Washington State, joining the business effort to approve Referendum 74 in November.
