Why We’re Winning: Week of August 27

  • David Koch – a wealthy GOP donor fueling the campaigns of Mitt Romney and many Republican candidates across the country – announced his support for marriage equality yesterday. When reminded that his stance was out of step with both the Romney campaign and the GOP platform, Koch responded: “Well, I disagree with that.” Koch is the latest in a series of prominent Republicans – and a near-majority of Republicans under 35 – to express support for marriage equality.
  • Earlier this week, Vice President Joe Biden lauded the LGBT community, saying: Many of you have advanced civil rights at great expense….If I had to use one adjective to describe this community, it'd be courage. You have summoned the courage to speak out, to come out. We owe you.”
  • On Tuesday night, Kyrsten Sinema won the Democratic primary in Arizona and is one step closer to becoming the first openly bisexual member of Congress. Sinema is endorsed by both HRC and the Victory Fund, and now faces a tough general election against Valley Town councilman Vernon Parker.
