White House Launches LGBT Page
June 3, 2011
The Obama Administration has added an LGBT page to the official White House website, offering easy access to useful information and resources for LGBT Americans. President Obama has been a steadfast supporter of the LGBT community and has done more for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans than any other president in history. Next Tuesday, the administration will host the first-ever LGBT Youth Summit here in Washington, D.C. The director of HRC’s Family Project, Ellen Kahn, will be attendance.
LGBT youths are a uniquely vulnerable population in America’s schools. Because they suffer at a higher rate than many of their peer groups from physical violence, bullying, anxiety and depression, LGBT youths are more prone to exhibit high-risk behaviors such as substance abuse, sexual risk-taking and running away from home. The summit will bring together students, educators, administrators, and heads of federal and nonprofit agencies to provide information and seek solutions to these issues.
