What to Watch for Tonight at the 66th Annual Emmy Awards

The Emmy Awards, which airs tonight on NBC, will feature a wide array of LGBT celebrities, allies and HRC supporters.

Here are some big names and moments to watch for:

  • Laverne Cox could make Emmy history tonight as the first openly transgender person to win an Emmy. She was nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Sophia Burset on the hit Netflix series Orange is the New Black (OITNB).
  • Jodie Foster is nominated for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series for the OITNB episode, “Lesbian Request Denied.”
  • The Normal Heartwhich is about the growing HIV/AIDS epidemic in the early 1980s, could be a big winner tonight. The TV movie received 16 nominations. Ryan Murphy is nominated for Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries and publicly out actors Jim Parsons, Joe Mantello and Matt Bomer each received a nomination in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie category.
  • Bryan Cranston, who is a member of HRC’s American for Marriage Equality campaign, is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of Walter White in Breaking Bad (the show is also nominated for Outstanding Drama Series).
  • HRC supporter Jesse Tyler Ferguson is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his portrayal as Mitchell Pritchett on Modern Family.
  • Gay actor Jim Parsons is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for The Big Bang Theory.
