Fred Phelps, founder of the notoriously anti-LGBT Westboro Baptist Church, passed away on March 20, 2014. His death came shortly after several of his children left WBC, and he was excommunicated from the church.
Many Americans have felt the hate Westboro has spread, which leads them to have thoughts of protesting Fred Phelps’ funeral, as he did for those of many LGBT citizens and American soldiers.
Former President of the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association, Steven Petrow, wrote a piece published in the Washington Post regarding Phelps’ death, and the need for restraint from his opposition.
Petrow suggested that those affected by Phelps rise about the hate, and offered an alternative to protests. “So, with Phelps’s passing, I suggest we bombard Westboro Baptist with sympathy cards and prayers. Or, as a friend of mine tells me: ‘Drive your enemies really crazy: Love them.’ Okay, maybe not love, but at least not hate. Never hate.”
