Watch: Transgender Coverage in the Workplace: Little Cost, Big Results

Today HRC Workplace Program Director Deena Fidas was featured in an Associated Press story on the importance of transgender healthcare benefits.

An increasing number of companies are extending their healthcare policies to include benefits for transgender individuals.  These benefits send an important signal not only to transgender individuals, but to all employees.

“It is in essence saying, ‘You know if my company is going to take care of my colleague in this way, then I know that they’ll take care of me,’” said Fidas.

And, according to Fidas, extending benefits to include equal health coverage for transgender individuals without exclusion for medically necessary care comes at little cost to the company.

“We’ve actually gotten kudos from this,” said Jackie Glenn of EMC Corporation.

Each year, HRC provides an in-depth analysis and rating of large U.S. employers and their policies and practices pertinent to LGBT employees as part of its Corporate Equality Index.
