Watch: HRC and Greater Than AIDS Join Forces to Combat HIV/AIDS
July 29, 2014 by Noël Gordon, Foundation Project Manager
HRC is proud to unveil a new video building on our partnership with the Greater Than AIDS movement.
The collaboration, launched earlier this summer in Nashville, Tennessee, seeks to mobilize the LGBT community in response to the HIV epidemic, and to confront the silence and stigma that too often surround the disease.
While HIV continues to affect Americans from all walks of life, transmission rates are particularly high among gay and bisexual men of color, transgender women, and youth ages 13 to 24 – especially those living in the southern United States. While tremendous medical advances have helped many HIV-positive individuals lead longer, healthier lives, there remains no cure and tens of thousands of new infections occur every year.
“As the nation’s largest LGBT civil rights organization, it’s our responsibility to really take this issue seriously,” said Jeff Krehely, HRC vice president and chief foundation officer. “The partnership between Greater Than AIDS and HRC is a way for us to start the conversation about HIV and AIDS and where the epidemic is right now – and what people can do to empower themselves, protect themselves, and get treatment if they happen to be positive.”
As part of the partnership, HRC will distribute 31,000 co-branded materials at 18 LGBT pride festivals across the country, including a new resource guide with information on HIV/AIDS specifically tailored for the LGBT community. Watch the video below and share it with your friends and family using the hashtag #SpeakOutHIV.
