Edith Windsor and her late partner Thea Spyer became national celebrities when Windsor’s lawsuit resulted in the U.S. Supreme Court striking down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) earlier this year. But a court decision could not do justice to a relationship that spanned four decades and weathered illness, distance, and time.
Windsor was named a Runner-Up for TIME Magazine’s 2013 Person of the Year award, and the magazine has released a slideshow of pictures from her photo albums—some from as long ago as the 1960s. These often gorgeous images tell the story of two women who were deeply in love, professionally successful, and enthusiastic about life.
