Watch: Department of Defense Celebrates the Benefits Now Open to Same-Sex Couples
September 25, 2013 by Maureen McCarty, HRC Associate Director of Digital Media
Today the Department of Defense released a video celebrating the road to equality from “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repeal to the official extension of spousal and family benefits to same-sex couples.
The video features Senior Chief Dwayne Beebe-Franqui and Jonathan Beebe-Franqui as they apply for their military id cards on September 3.
“Up until this date, there’s so many commitments and promises and things that we’ve done together as a married couple that now are finally going to be recognized,” Jonathan said in the video. “It’s something as simple as an ID card that seals that.“
“Really what it boils down to is that we’re taking care of families,” said Dwayne. “And the service member can go protect his country and do what they need to do to protect our country.”
