Volunteers Provide the Spark that Powers MN Campaign

The following post comes from HRC Field Organizer Allie Breyer:

Electric. If I had to choose one word to describe my time on this campaign to defeat the discriminatory amendment that would ban marriage equality here in Minnesota, that would be it. Every day, I am recharged by the passion and importance of this campaign. With support coming from every direction- from churches like the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America to huge corporations like General Mills and Thomson Reuters and from everyday Minnesotans who really care about this issue, I am reminded of what this campaign means- and what it will mean when we defeat this amendment in November.

It has been a truly life-changing and awe-inspiring experience. My favorite part of it all is watching my volunteers grow and take ownership of this campaign. Some initially commit to a couple hours here and there and as time has progresses I get to witness them leading trainings, telling their stories, and becoming the fuel this campaign needs to beat this amendment in November. Their stories of love and compassion for their brothers, their sisters, their parents and relatives, their partners, their friends, and themselves has made me even more proud of the work I have been doing.

One volunteer in particular has dedicated an immense amount of time, energy, and commitment to this campaign. Veda has been volunteering on this campaign for several months now but it is only until recently that I have had the pleasure of working with her. She does this work as a straight married woman, a Christian, a teacher, and as a sister to a member of the LGBT community. Veda has taken on so many roles in all aspects of our trainings and launch events, and it’s wonderful to see a woman so dedicated to bettering the lives of others in her community.

None of us asked for this amendment to be put on the ballot. None of us asked for this fight. But now that they have put this on our plate, we are ready to do this and we will do this, no matter what. With my fellow organizers, leaders, and volunteers by my side, I have no doubt in my mind that we will overcome this and make history, starting right here in Minnesota.

HRC is a proud supporter of the coalition, Minnesotans United for All Families, working to defeat the amendment banning same-sex marriage in the state.  HRC has set up a special fund – HRC Minnesota Family Freedom PAC – to direct 100 percent of your contribution to defeat the anti-marriage constitutional amendment in Minnesota.
