Virginia Volunteers Still Tirelessly Fighting for the Equality Ticket

Post submitted by Heena Kepadia, an HRC field organizer based in Eastern Prince William County that works out of the Dumfries coordinated campaign office. She's a recent graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and has plans to attend law school in the future.
I moved to Virginia from Texas in June to help with the campaign as a Fellow because I knew that this was the race to win in 2013!
In August, I was hired to organize with HRC and assigned to Eastern Prince William County, an extremely important area with tons of votes. It has been a great experience to not only support the statewide ticket of McAuliffe, Northam and Herring, but to be doing so as an organizer representing HRC. I strongly believe that not having marriage equality and equal rights for LGBT citizens is treating some citizens as lesser members of society. My volunteers have loved that I’m not just working with the coordinated campaign, but representing HRC, an organization that tirelessly fights for LGBT equality.
In addition to mobilizing volunteers to make sure our endorsed candidates are victorious on Tuesday, I have had the amazing opportunity to hear guest speakers and assist with a rally for Terry McAuliffe with President Clinton. One of the surrogates I got to meet was Mayor Julian Castro of San Antonio. I admire Mayor Castro greatly as a fellow Texan and as a progressive leader. He spoke to us about coming from a family of immigrants and working hard to achieve change and I really identified with that as a first generation American. He talked about providing all Americans with the opportunity to be successful and how we can help those who are less fortunate. It was very inspiring!

The election is only a few days away and this weekend we’ll be working hard to get-out-the-vote for the pro-equality ticket! If you’re interested in joining me in Prince William County to knock on doors, please email Jamie Lockhart, our Virginia State Director, at [email protected].
