Villaraigosa: GOP Platform “From another Century”
September 4, 2012 by Dan Rafter, Online Campaigns Manager
Los Angeles Mayor, Democratic National Convention Chairman, and equality supporter Antonio Villaraigosa is speaking out about the GOP’s antiquated platform. In an interview with FOX News this weekend, Villaraigosa points to the platform’s positions on a number of important social issues as one of the reasons it is so far out-of-step with mainstream values.
Villaraigosa referenced the Republican Party’s insistence on repealing the Affordable Care Act, its war on women’s health, and its harsh stance on immigration as just a few of the reasons the platform is indicative of one that’s “from another century.” Villaraigosa said the platform looks more like something from 1812 rather than 2012.
The platform is just as outdated when it comes to LGBT equality – despite the fact that a majority of Americans, a near-majority of Republicans under 35, and a number of prominent GOP figures support marriage equality – the platform vigorously defends the Defense of Marriage Act and commits the party to pursuing a federal marriage amendment.

The Democratic Party will affirm their platform in Charlotte today. According to earlier drafts, it includes full support for LGBT equality – specifically marriage equality and workplace protections. Learn more about the GOP platform.
