There’s much to celebrate with the passage of marriage equality legislation in Washington – and bipartisan support for the bill is just one of the reasons!
Take a few minutes to check out the emotional speech by Rep. Maureen Walsh, a Republican from Walla Walla. Walsh is a widow, and spoke about the wonderful connection that she shared with her husband – and thinks no one should be denied the right to experience that same bond she was able to have through marriage.
She also opened up about her daughter, a lesbian, and told a story about when her daughter defended another child who was being bullied.
“I was never more proud of my kid than knowing she was speaking against the vocal majority on behalf of the rights of the minority. And to me, it is incumbent upon us as legislators in this state to do that. That is why we are here,” Walsh said.
“Someone made the comment that this is not about equality. Well, yes it is about equality. And why in the world would we not allow those equal rights for individuals who truly were committed to one another in life to be able to show that by way of a marriage?”
