Family Research Council president Tony Perkins appeared on CNN this morning, pushing his anti-LGBT group’s tired and deceptive rhetoric about why the BSA’s ban on openly gay scouts and scout leaders was actually a good thing.
Perkins told CNN’s Soledad O’Brien that lifting the ban didn’t pass the “parent test” – and went on to falsely link being gay to pedophilia, implying that it would be irresponsible for a parent to allow their children to go camping with gay scout leaders. O’Brien pointed out to Perkins that she herself was a parent, and was unsure of exactly what he was implying.
Perkins went on to insist that ending discrimination in the Scouts would be unfair: “Is that right for Boy Scouts who are out wanting to learn the basic tenets of scouting to have to worry about whether or not the boy in the tent with them is attracted to them?”
Check out the video – which includes Soledad O’Brien challenging Perkins on his points – below:
Comparing LGBT people to pedophiles is a staple of FRC’s inflammatory rhetoric, of which there is never a shortage. Just a few months ago, Perkins made the dire prediction that the rising support for marriage equality would actually cause a “revolution” which would “break this nation apart.”
Earlier this morning, the BSA announced it would delay action on whether or not to lift its ban on gays until their national board meeting in May.
