Victory in Delaware!
May 7, 2013 by Karl Bach, Senior Regional Field Organizer
Marriage equality is about to become the law of the land in Delaware – the state Senate just passed the landmark legislation by a vote of 12-9! Governor Jack Markell will sign the bill into law later today.
Today’s historic victory follows an unprecedented undertaking led by Equality Delaware - hundreds of Delawareans volunteered, canvassed neighborhoods, participated in phone banks, and reached out to their lawmakers to make this bill a reality. State leaders including Governor Jack Markell, Rep. Melanie George Smith, and Attorney General Beau Biden advocated tirelessly for the bill. DuPont and some of the state’s largest labor unions supported the legislation.
I’ve been on the ground here in the First State for the past few months working as Deputy Field Director for Equality Delaware. It’s been amazing to work with such a dedicated and passionate staff here – I’ve seen volunteers work around the clock seven days a week to make today’s victory a reality; Delawareans from all walks of life have shared their personal stories to change hearts and minds; and we’ve executed a successful strategy so that every single lawmaker heard from a resounding number of their constituents who support marriage equality.
HRC also played a critical role in winning marriage here – we’ve been working with Equality Delaware since 2009. During our time here, the campaign was able to send well over 13,000 phone calls and 7,500 emails to lawmakers, as well as hundreds of written letters. This has truly been a tremendous effort.
Today, Delaware becomes the 11th state in the nation to embrace marriage equality. The momentum for equality that I saw first-hand here in Delaware is at work across the nation!
