Values Voter Summit 2012 Gets Underway

The Family Research Council’s Values Voter Summit is getting underway in Washington D.C. this morning – and speakers have wasted no time in touching on LGBT issues. So far, there have been unfounded references to military chaplains having their rights infringed upon. While talking about Christian love, one speaker pointed to the need to call out “destructive behaviors.”

GOP Vice Presidential nominee Paul Ryan is set to take the stage shortly. The event is being live-steam this year – you can check out the proceedings at http://www.c-span.org/Events/Value-Voters-Summit-Hosts-Leading-Conservatives-Politicians/10737434091-1/.

Other speakers at this year’s conference include Rep. Michele Bachmann, Rep. Steve King, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, Sen. Jim DeMint, the American Family Association’s Tim Wildmon, Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell, and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee.

HRC joined the Southern Poverty Law Center and other human rights organization earlier this week in calling on Ryan and others not to speak at the event because of the FRC’s repeated instances of demonizing LGBT people with hateful and untrue propaganda.  Cardinal Timothy Dolan and Ann Romney are among those who rejected invitations to appear at the event. Check out some of the FRC’s most common lies about LGBT people and read the letter HRC, SPLC, and other groups signed together.

We’ll have more today as the Values Voter Summit continues.
