Update: School Board Moves to Fire Viki Knox
January 12, 2012 by Dan Rafter, Associate Director of Communications
The Union Township School Board has filed tenure charges against Viki Knox, according to the New Jersey Star-Ledger. Knox is the anti-LGBT teacher in New Jersey who last fall posted a homophobic rant on her public Facebook wall. The tenure charges set in motion the process necessary to fire Knox.
HRC worked with Garden State Equality and called on the Union Township School Board to take immediate action following Knox’s rant. We delivered signatures from over 75,000 members and supporters to a school board meeting and successfully called on the Executive County Superintendent to open an investigation into the incident. Governor Chris Christie also condemned Knox’s remarks.
In Knox’s rant, sent to Garden State Equality, she said:
“Why parade your unnatural immoral behaviors before the rest of us? AND YOU ARE WRONG! I/WE DO NOT HAVE TO ACCEPT ANYTHING, ANYONE. ANY BEHAVIOR OR ANY CHOICES! I DO NOT HAVE TO TOLERATE ANYTHING OTHERS WISH TO DO.”
HRC later uncovered a homophobic tweet from Knox, blasting the implementation of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repeal.
According to the Star-Ledger, the process to fire Knox could be a lengthy one. We’ll have more on Back Story as it develops.
