A marriage equality bill in Illinois passed out of the state Senate’s Executive Committee yesterday evening by an 8-5 party line vote. Equality advocates, led by the Illinois Unites for Marriage coalition and State Sen. Heather Steans, the bill’s sponsor, plan on launching a renewed push for passage when the new legislative session begins.
HRC is proud to be a member of the Illinois Unites for Marriage coalition, and looks forward to continued engagement on efforts to pass marriage equality in Illinois once the new session begins.
Momentum for marriage equality is growing within Illinois – in recent weeks, President Barack Obama and even the Illinois GOP Chair have spoken out in favor of allowing loving, committed same-sex couples in the state to marry. Governor Pat Quinn has indicated he supports the legislation as well. But our opponents are rallying to defeat the measure – just yesterday NOM re-launched their tired pledge to once again defeat any Republican lawmaker who embraced marriage equality.
Be sure to check back with the HRC Blog next week as the fight for marriage equality in Illinois continues.
