United Nations Releases Music Video Supporting Same-Sex Couples in India

Last week, the United Nation’s Free & Equal campaign released Bollywood-style music video that lends support to same-sex couples in India. Featuring Celina Jaitly, Bollywood actress and longtime vocal supporter of equality in India, the video features a popular old song remixed by Bombay Vikings.

With a glamorous set and peppy tunes, the video showcases how important family acceptance is in India, and Asia in general, and how mindsets are changing all across the world about LGBTIQ people. This video comes at a time when legal battles around criminalization of same-sex relations are ongoing at the Supreme Court of India, which overturned a progressive 2009 Delhi High Court decision that had decriminalized consensual same-sex activity.

India has seen a sharp rise in celebrities and media outlets speaking out against criminalization and calling on for acceptance of the LGBTIQ community over the last few months since the Supreme Court decision, and Bollywood itself has come a long way in maturing from once caricaturizing LGBTIQ people to now portraying real people and real stories on celluloid.
