England and Wales Pass Marriage Equality
July 17, 2013 by Maureen McCarty, HRC Senior Digital Strategist
This morning, Queen Elizabeth II granted royal assent to the marriage equality bill in England and Wales after the legislation surmounted its final obstacle in Parliament yesterday.
The queen’s approval is a formality and the last step for a bill to become a law.
The marriage equality bill was introduced in Parliament in January and received support from British Prime Minister David Cameron.
Marriages are expected to begin next summer in England and Wales.
In the U.S., 13 states and the District of Columbia have achieved marriage equality.
