United Kingdom Official Visits HRC
October 15, 2013 by Marty Rouse, National Field Director
Maria Miller, Secretary of State for Culture, Media, and Sport and Minister for Women and Equalities, visited the Human Rights Campaign today to talk about marriage equality.
Secretary Miller discussed her pride in working with her Conservative Party officials and others in passing the Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Bill in Parliament earlier this year. Marriage equality will go into effect in England and Wales sometime next summer.
Secretary Miller was particularly interested today in hearing about efforts on this side of the pond to win marriage equality and how our efforts are focused on individual states as well as the Supreme Court.
While there are many differences between the UK and the US, Secretary Miller pointed out that winning marriage equality on both sides of the Atlantic comes when we focus on love and commitment.
"Equal marriage is about the fundamental values and principles which bind us together as a society," said Miller today in an op-ed for the Huffington Post. "I remain of the view that far from being a radical departure, equal marriage is simply one more in a long line of reforms which have strengthened the institution of marriage, ensuring it remains relevant to our society in the 21st century."
Thank you, Secretary Miller, for all that you have done to win equality in England and Wales and for taking the time to visit with us at the Human Rights Campaign.
