Unbelievable: Thompson Campaign Hits Tammy Baldwin on ‘Values’
September 6, 2012 by Dan Rafter, Associate Director of Communications
All week long, we’ve been talking about how historic this Democratic convention in Charlotte is for our community – not just because of a platform that embraces full marriage equality and inclusive workplace protections, and not just because of the record-breaking number of LGBT participants – but because so many speakers are addressing LGBT equality when speaking about American values.
Tammy Baldwin is set to address the convention tonight to discuss heartland values. As a pioneer in her own right and a longtime figure in Wisconsin politics, both in the state and in the U.S. House of Representatives, Baldwin is uniquely positioned to address heartland values.
But apparently, the Tommy Thompson campaign political director disagrees.
The Journal Sentinel is reporting that the Thompson staffer, Brian Nemoir, emailed around video of Baldwin at Wisconsin’s 2010 Capitol Pride and wrote: "Clearly, there's no one better positioned to talk 'heartland values' than Tammy.”
Despite the fact that a growing number of Americans – and Republicans – are embracing equality for LGBT people, Thompson’s campaign director seems to think that, because Tammy Baldwin is a lesbian, she is ill-equipped to talk about values.
Prove Nemoir wrong. Tammy is speaking this evening at the convention – be sure to tune in at 6:30pm ET, and show your support for Tammy and heartland values by donating to her campaign now!
