UMD Terrapins Support Equality

The following is from HRC’s Shelena Williams, who is working with our Field Team for marriage equality in Maryland:

Yesterday I spent the afternoon on the campus of University of Maryland, College Park talking to students about marriage equality. Regional Field Organizer Adrian Matanza and I, along with other organizers from Equality Maryland took post outside of Stamp Student Union; where we spoke to students about the significance of the campaign, and our need for volunteers.

I spoke to one person that was uber-excited about the work we are doing on campus and promised to tell her friends about our phone bank! I’ll be working with the field team for a couple weeks as we keep up the fight for equality for all Marylanders. I’ve done campaign work like this before, but this issue is very important to me. I live in Gaithersburg, Maryland and I want to see equality because I deserve the same privileges and rights as my heterosexual counterparts.  As Dr. King said, " injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." You can get involved to make sure we pass the Religious Freedom and Civil Marriage Protection Act and work add gender identity protections to the state’s anti-discrimination laws.

If you’re in the area, join us tomorrow night from 6:30-9:30 at Goodloe Unitarian Universalist at 1540C Pointer Ridge Place in Bowie, MD, where we’ll be calling Marylanders to support equality in the state. If you want more information, email me at Also, we’ll be heading to the state capitol on January 31st, 2011 to speak to our legislators face to face. Join us! What: Why Marriage Matters Day When: Monday, January 31st, 2011 at 5pm Where: Lawyers Mall across from the Maryland Statehouse, 100 State Circle, Annapolis, MD 21401
