Tweet Now: Tell NOM to Speak Out against Tainted Money
December 6, 2012 by Maureen McCarty, HRC Associate Director of Digital Media
Join HRC in calling on anti-equality organizations to denounce $10,000 donation from lawyer with active ties to a white supremacy, secessionist hate group.
As we reported earlier today, a Maryland lawyer with ties to a white supremacist, secessionist organization is among the top contributors to the group that led the failed efforts to defeat Maryland’s marriage equality law. He is an active member of the League of the South, a neo-Confederate, secessionist organization labeled an “explicitly racist” hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
The Maryland Marriage Alliance (MMA) was founded and funded by the Maryland Catholic Conference and the National Organization for Marriage. The Roman Catholic Church poured in approximately $425,000 into the MMA, with NOM pumping in $1.2 million. Together, NOM and the Roman Catholic Church provided more than 60 percent of MMA’s war chest.
We’re calling on Maryland Marriage Alliance to return Peroutka ‘s $10,000 donation. We’re also calling on the Maryland Catholic Conference, which played a leading role in founding the Maryland Marriage Alliance, to publicly denounce Perotka’s donation.
Join HRC in calling out this donation and denouncing NOM’s connection to an active white supremacist and secessionist sympathizer.
