UPDATE: The vigil for Islan Nettles originially planned for Monday has been postponed to Tuesday, August 27 at 6:00pm at Jackie Robinson Park. Click here for further details.
Islan Nettles, a 21-year-old transgender woman who was brutally attacked in Harlem over the weekend, has died.
According to media reports and the NYPD, Nettles was out with a group of friends Saturday night when a group of men identified her as transgender and began throwing punches and yelling anti-gay and anti-transgender slurs.
Nettles was rushed to Harlem Hospital following the attack. On Thursday she was declared brain dead and taken off life support.
One person has been arrested in relation to the attack. The New York City Anti-Violence Project (AVP) reports that the NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force and the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office are currently investigating the incident.
HRC condemns this horrendous act of violence and calls on the NYPD to swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice. We send our deepest condolences to Ms. Nettles’ family, friends and loved ones and encourage those in the NY area to join the AVP for the vigil next week honoring her life.
