UPDATE: Out of 62 contestants, Talackova finished the competition in the Top 12 and was one of four women crowned 'Miss Congeniality." Congratulations to Jenna for her courage and poise throughout the competition.
Tonight in Toronto, Jenna Talackova is set to make history.
The 23-year-old from Vancouver will be the first-ever transgender contestant to compete in the Miss Universe Canada pageant.
Talackova made headlines in March when pageant organizers disqualified her for not being a “naturally born female.”
The announcement sparked outrage and conversation about what such a phrase could even mean. Donald Trump, the pageant’s owner, eventually overturned the decision.
Competition kicks off tonight, and a winner will be crowned on Saturday. Talackova has thanked the Miss Universe Canada Organization for honorably “paving the way for equality.” Watch her message near the end of the video below.
