We’re gearing up for what’s sure to be a dynamic and thought-provoking discussion tonight here at HRC’s DC headquarters.
Renowned developmental and clinical psychologist Diane Ehrensaft will kick off HRC’s new Equality Talks series, by discussing her extensive work with gender-nonconforming children and their families. Dr. Ehrensaft is the author of Gender Born, Gender Made: Raising Healthy Gender-Nonconforming Children and was profiled just this morning by the Washington Post's parenting blog.
The public event starts at 6:30 p.m. EST. You can watch the event live online by visiting www.hrc.org/equalitytalks.
As Dr. Ehrensaft told HRC staff this morning, it’s vital for all citizens to relearn gender and promote gender affirmative environments for all children.
“It absolutely takes a village to raise a healthy generation of gender-nonconforming kids. ... Children depend on their elders to set the tone of the society that they grow in, and if it is a society that accepts all genders, they will do okay. And if it accepts all kinds of gender expressions, they will do okay. ... If we don’t relearn gender ourselves and understand who these children are who go against the gender grain, we’ll never be able to be anything but bystanding citizens.”
Those interested in attending tonight’s DC event can RSVP here. And don’t forget the event will be broadcast live on our Equality Talks page starting at 6:30 p.m. EST. A recording will remain available online in the days to come.
Hope to see you there!
