TODAY: Oral Arguments To Be Heard in Indiana Marriage Case
May 2, 2014 by HRC staff
Today attorneys from Lambda Legal will ask the court to require Indiana to continue recognizing the marriage of a lesbian couple, as well as to extend marriage rights to all same-sex couples in Indiana.
Last month Judge Richard Young ordered the state to recognize the marriage of Niki Quasney and Amy Sandler, which was performed in Massachusetts, as Ms. Quasney is battling stage four cancer. In his order, Judge Young wrote “the court finds there will likely be insufficient evidence of a legitimate state interest to justify the singling out of same-sex married couples for non-recognition.”
In the case, Baskin v. Bogan, Lambda Legal represents Quasney & Sandler and four other plaintiff couples challenging Indiana’s ban on marriage equality.
