This School Year, Renew Your Commitment to LGBTQ Youth
August 20, 2014 by HRC staff
It’s hard to believe another summer has come to a close. As educators, coaches and other youth-serving professionals prepare for the upcoming school year, it’s a great time to reflect on goals for the year ahead and take new, concrete steps to ensure a safe, welcoming environment for all youth who pass through your doors.
LGBTQ youth are more than twice as likely to be verbally harrassed or called names in school, as compared to their non-LGBTQ peers.
The Human Rights Campaign Foundation in partnership with the National Education Association and the American Counseling Association is proud to present Time To THRIVE, the 2nd annual national conference to promote safety, inclusion and well-being for LGBTQ youth...everywhere!
Research shows that the deck continues to be stacked against young people growing up LGBTQ in America. The impact of family rejection, bullying, and daily concern for safety weighs heavily on our youth. That is why Time to THRIVE engages a broad audience of youth-serving professionals, including K-12 educators, mental health providers, pediatricians, religious leaders, recreational athletic coaches, and youth development staff (Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCAs, scout leaders, etc.), we can create a thriving LGBTQ youth population.
Time to THRIVE will take place over Presidents' Day Weekend, February 13-15, 2015 at the Hilton Portland & Executive Tower, in Portland, Oregon.
Last year more than 600 youth-serving professionals from around the country joined us for an exciting weekend of presentations and workshops, including special guest appearances by Betty DeGeneres, LZ Granderson, EJ Johnson, Dolores Huerta, Lance Bass, Chelsea Clinton and actress Ellen Page.
