This National Marriage Week, Let Real Love Conquer Hate
February 14, 2012 by Dan Rafter, Associate Director of Communications
It’s National Marriage Week, according to Let’s Strengthen Marriage, a “national campaign” to elevate restricting marriage to one man and one woman a national issue. According to the campaign, it “is clear that children are best served when they grow up with both a mother and father.”
Anti-gay organizations like NOM are all over this. So let’s take a look at what, exactly, NOM has done to strengthen marriage:
- They campaign – often with tactics of fear and extreme secrecy – to undermine the ability of LGBT families to secure the rights and recognitions they need and deserve.
- They support candidates like Rick Santorum, who has equated marriage equality to polygamy and even inanimate objects, and says LGBT people don’t deserve the privilege of marrying the person they love.
- They generated a hateful “marriage pledge” that calls for a federal marriage amendment discriminating against LGBT families and even proposes a McCarthy-like panel to investigate allegations of “harassment” against their virulently anti-gay supporters.
That’s just the top of the iceberg – check out www.nomexposed.org for even more information.
Despite the obstacles we face, LGBT individuals and families are building flourishing families and lives in communities across the country. We still face discriminatory federal and state-level legislative challenges. And we must continue to confront anti-LGBT organizations and leaders like NOM and Rick Santorum. But this Valentine’s Day, check out what love and commitment means to us. This is a video we made last year for an anti-marriage equality Ruth Institute video contest. Check it out again and share with your family and friends:
