Things are heating up in Maine!

University of Maine students phonebank for equality with HRC. Update from HRC Regional Field Organizer Jeremy Kennedy: After outstanding victories in Iowa and Vermont, all eyes are on Maine as the next state in the country to allow same-sex couples to marry. Last week, due to overwhelming response from the public, the leadership in the Maine legislature decided it was University of Maine students with HRC Regional Field Organizer Jeremy Kennedy.necessary to change venues to accommodate the thousands of people who will be coming to the public hearing on the marriage bill. The public hearing, which will take place at 9 am on Wednesday, April 22nd at the Augusta Civic Center will be the most important day of the campaign outside the final vote.  The media, legislators, governor, and the people of Maine will be watching.  We cannot let the opposition outnumber us on this critical day. I have been working on behalf of HRC with Equality Maine for almost 3 months now, and excitement is building as we near the hearing. In an effort to turn out our supporters and get them to tell their legislators to vote YES on the marriage bill, I gathered a team of 15 volunteers at the University of Maine Farmington this weekend. We made over 1,000 calls to voters! This team of dedicated students has been calling voters for the last 2 months, every weekend- resulting in over 5,000 calls! The response from voters has been overwhelming- people are excited that we called them and eager to call their legislators! One woman we called said “It’s about time!” when we told her that there was legislation introduced to give same-sex couples the right to get married. The people of Maine are ready to support fairness and equality! As I continue to work on the path towards marriage equality here…I will keep you updated! Now more than ever, we need you to join us at the public hearing.  RSVP to [email protected].  Please include your name, address, and phone number.
