The People of Hawaii Support Civil Unions
July 1, 2010
Our final push in the Aloha State continued on Wednesday as Adrian and I were once again joined by representatives from a coalition of leading LGBT organizations in the state, including Equality Hawaii, the GLBT Caucus of the Democratic Party of Hawaii, PFLAG-Oahu and Pride Alliance Hawaii. Our groups have come together as one voice over the past several weeks and months presenting a united front for the advocacy of HB 444, Hawaii’s Civil Unions bill. Without each group’s contribution to the effort, we wouldn’t be where we are today. Just as we themed Monday’s action to the Governor as business supporting civil unions, today’s action to the Governor was about the people of Hawaii and their support for treating their friends, family and neighbors equally under the law. We visited the Governor’s office for the second time this week to show her that there is strong support for this bill and for treating everyone with the same dignity and respect. The Honolulu Star Advertiser and other local media were on hand to cover the event. Following the holiday weekend and a federal holidary on Monday, the Governor is set to announce her decision on civil unions sometime Tuesday morning, so we’re doing everything we can to make a final impact before her decision is rendered.
