The Fight for Marriage Equality in Minnesota Continues

It’s been an incredible three weeks on the ground here in Minnesota since I returned after a short break following the historic ‘Vote No’ campaign when we defeated the anti-marriage constitutional amendment at the ballot box. Now, because of the incredible energy and momentum created by those thousands of conversations all over the state, we have an historic opportunity to pass marriage equality through the legislature in 2013. Together, with HRC partnering once again with Minnesotans United for All Families as a major partner, we will do it.

This historic moment didn’t happen accidentally. Over 27,000 volunteers canvassed and called their friends, neighbors and complete strangers and changed hearts and minds. More than 60,000 people gave money in tough financial times, 90% from within Minnesota. In just a single year Minnesota has gone from a state where polls had the amendment passing by large margins to a state where those Minnesotans who support same-sex marriage now outnumber those opposed.

It’s now our job to take that message to legislators, 58 percent of whom represent districts that voted with us.

No other campaign in Minnesota history has had such an activated base of supporters ready to take action, in a little over a week almost 20,000 individuals have already signed Minnesotans United’s petition reaffirming their support urging legislators to supporting marriage equality. As Political Director for the campaign, I’ve seen firsthand the excitement to get this done. The defeat of the marriage amendment in Minnesota was a decisive message from voters that marriage matters, and in 2013, Minnesota state legislators have the historic opportunity to ensure that the North Star State no longer singles out same-sex couples or treats them differently simply because of who they are.

We have momentum but there is still work to do and only a short time to do it, but with hard work, smart strategy, and a great team of staff and volunteers we’ll make history again in Minnesota. If you want to get involved in the campaign, contact me at trevor.chandler@hrc.org.
