Saturday marks the tenth anniversary of marriage equality in Massachusetts. In honor of the ten year anniversary, Boston Globe photographer Joel Benjamin tracked down the plaintiffs from Goodridge v. Department of Public Health.
Plaintiff Gloria Bailey-Davies remembers, “The feeling of absolute joy and relief to finally be each other’s legal next of kin and knowing we would always have access to each other in any illness or emergency.”
Most of the plaintiffs said they were shocked at how quickly marriage has spread to 16 other states plus the District of Columbia. Support for marriage equality is now at an unprecedented 59 percent.
Ten years ago Massachusetts became the first state in the country to issue marriage licenses for same-sex couples. Throughout the week, HRC is celebrating the multitude of individuals and organizations that helped to bring about this watershed moment.
Thank you to the plaintiffs, GLAD attorneys, and MassEquality's coalition of 17 organizations that helped to make Massachusetts marriage a reality.
