Tegan and Sara, The Jane Doze Rock Long Island for HRC
July 26, 2013 by Maureen McCarty, HRC Senior Digital Strategist
Last night HRC members and supporters packed into The Paramount in Huntington, Long Island to rock for equality with Tegan and Sara and The Jane Doze.
The Canadian indie-pop duo, Tegan and Sara, are currently on tour with fellow HRC supporters fun., but took a break in their tour schedule to help support HRC in the fight for equality.
The band played a 45-minute set combining music from both their most recent album and older chart-toppers before sitting down with Amanda Leigh Dunn of The Real L Word for a question and answer segment.
In Canada, marriage equality has long been a reality. However, Sara reminded the audience of the work that still lies ahead for LGBT Americans.
“[The Supreme Court victories] are a huge part of the process of moving forward to making sure everybody in the United States has equality,” said Sara. “But it’s still a massive fight, so we can’t get too side tracked on celebrating,.”
Currently, 13 U.S states, plus the D.C., legally recognize same-sex marriage.
Special guest DJs The Jane Doze wrapped up the show with a high-energy dance party, bringing a few members of the audience onstage to rock with them.
Thank you to all who turned out to support HRC. Last night’s benefit would not have been possible without The Paramount, which donated its beautiful space in support of equality, HRC Board of Governor Lauren Verrusio, the Greater New York Steering Committee and the HRC membership outreach team.
