Tammy Baldwin Tapped as Advocate’s “Person of the Year”

Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin, who was sworn in Thursday, earned the honor of The Advocate’s Person of the Year.

As the first woman elected to represent Wisconsin in the Senate and the first openly gay U.S. Senator, Baldwin is a role model for LGBT youth and young women across the country.

She is a strong voice for equality on Capital Hill and has championed every piece of LGBT legislation during her tenure in office.

This election season, HRC undertook unprecedented efforts to elect openly LGBT members of Congress, including Sen. Tammy Baldwin.

To help elect Tammy Baldwin to U.S. Senate, HRC’s members and supporters raised and contributed over $500,000 to her campaign.

HRC featured Baldwin’s campaign in ten fundraising emails reaching an audience of more than 2.5 million, promoted Baldwin regularly across HRC’s online properties, called out attempts by her opponents to attack Baldwin for her sexual orientation, conducted phone outreach throughout Wisconsin, as well as sent half a dozen HRC staffers to support the campaign.
