Take Action: FOX News’ Keith Ablow’s Latest Anti-Trans Remarks
January 17, 2014 by Jay Brown, Director of Research and Public Education
In his latest string of controversial statements, Fox News columnist Dr. Keith Ablow claimed that there is no “definite data that any male or female soul has ever in the history of the world been born into the wrong anatomic gender.” Join HRC now in taking a stand against Dr. Ablow’s latest anti-trans vitriol.
Allow me to introduce myself, Dr. Ablow. I am transgender. I was born female but have known myself to be male for as long as I can remember. And as I walk through life today, people see me for who I am – a guy.
Actually, they probably see me as a dad to two incredible little girls. A spouse of more than 10 years. A brother of an awesome sister. An uncle to amazing nieces. A son of some pretty great parents. I could go on – co-worker, runner, bad-bad-bad singer.
When I came out to many of them, the transgender issue was new to them. But they went on a journey of understanding – asking questions, talking, reflecting and, ultimately, supporting me. Every. Single. One. Of. Them.
But let me stop there. Because Dr. Ablow doesn’t care about me. Apparently I’m a figment of everybody’s imagination.
Let’s spotlight instead every credible health professional and social scientist out there – who by conservative estimates would say there are probably close to 1 million transgender people like me in the U.S. alone. Who not only think we’re real but who recognize the necessity of competent and inclusive health care and treatment. (See the APA’s statements here and here and the AMA’s policy on inclusive coverage here.)
Or let’s look to corporate America, where nearly 350 major employers not only prohibit discrimination against transgender workers but also provide inclusive health care coverage – and that number is going up every year (see www.hrc.org/cei).
Let’s be clear. Keith Ablow’s comments, while horrendous, are unsurprising. He has a track record of attacking transgender people – remember when he lashed out because Chaz Bono was a contestant on ‘Dancing with the Stars’, or when he said a J Crew ad featuring a mom painting her son’s toenails would "throw our species into real psychological turmoil"?
Dr. Ablow is entitled to his own opinions – but when he uses his platform as a “medical professional” and news commentator to disseminate untrue and even harmful information, he’s crossing the line. Take action now – join HRC in calling out Dr. Ablow’s most recent vitriolic remarks.
