String of National Victories Continues in New Mexico
February 9, 2012 by HRC staff
The following post comes from Trevor L. Chandler, HRC Regional Field Organizer:
Following the news of marriage equality passing the Washington State legislature and the 9th Circuit’s decision that Proposition 8 in California is unconstitutional, the LGBT community scored yet another win in New Mexico yesterday after an attempt to amend the state’s constitution was withdrawn from consideration. The victory came following a groundswell of grassroots opposition to the bill.
Rep. David Chavez introduced the legislation just over two weeks ago and HRC immediately activated our members throughout the state to take action. HRC called on members and supporters to contact their legislators, as well as Rep. Chavez himself, to say that lawmakers should be focused on creating jobs and improving the economy, not hurting New Mexico’s families. According to a recent poll, a majority of New Mexico families actually support marriage equality – showing how out of touch Rep. Chavez’s measure was.
The decision to withdraw the bill shows that on both a state and national level all citizens are tired of attacks on families. In the end, it was a great victory for equality in the Land of Enchantment!
