StoryCorps: One Mom’s Journey to Come Out as an Ally
June 28, 2013 by Maureen McCarty, HRC Associate Director of Digital Media
This morning on StoryCorps, Connie Casey sat down with her son Samuel Taylor, 22, to talk about their journey through Samuel’s coming out process.
When Samuel first came out as gay to his mother at the age of 15, Connie sent him to a series of reparative therapy centers associated with the now-defunct Exodus International.
For years the anti-LGBT organization advocated dangerous conversion therapy treatment to change an individual’s sexual orientation. Last week, Exodus International shuttered its doors and apologized to the LGBT community for undue judgment and dishonesty.
The coming out process is a deeply personal experience for every individual. For more resources visit HRC’s Coming Out Center.
