Status Update: Facebook Adds Icons for Same-Sex Married Couples
July 3, 2012 by Carolyn Simon, Associate Director of Digital Media
Check your Facebook timelines! The social network has unveiled a new feature that displays same-sex marriage icons when same-sex couples indicate they are married.
It’s not the first time that Facebook has made a change so same-sex couples can more accurately share the news about their coupledom. It added “in a civil union” and “in a domestic partnership” to its relationship status options more than a year ago.
Facebook has supported same-sex couples in other ways, including “grossing up” its salaries to help relieve the income-tax burdens of domestic partner benefits for its employees.
The new feature comes on the heels of news that the new iPhone operating system also includes gay and lesbian icons.
