Star Witness in Prop 8 Trial Advocates for Marriage Equality in New Video

This post comes from HRC Editorial and Digital Media Intern Leanne Naramore:

David Blankenhorn continues to advocate for equal civil rights in a new video released by Minnesotans United for All Families.

You may remember David Blankenhorn as an expert witness in the Prop 8 trial to uphold the law, or you may know him as the founder of the Institute for American Values.

This summer, he came out as a vocal supporter of marriage equality. In the new video from MN United, Blankenhorn speaks about his personal change of heart and why Minnesotans should vote “no” on a constitutional amendment in that would ban same-sex couples from equal marriage rights:

“I came to a stronger appreciation in my own mind of the importance of accepting gay and lesbian people and couples…there are powerful reasons to believe that we will be a better society if we include gay and lesbian people and their relationships as full and equal parts of society.”

Blankenhorn announced his change of heart in a New York Times op-ed this summer. HRC President Chad Griffin released a statement applauding Blankenhorn for publicly coming out as a supporter of equal rights:

“David Blankenhorn’s evolution on marriage equality is emblematic of the paradigm shift we are experiencing as a country on this issue.  Loving gay and lesbian couples should not be denied the ability to make the same lifelong commitment as everyone else and Blankenhorn’s agreement with that proposition puts him in the mainstream of American opinion. What David Blankenhorn has shown the world is that through careful deliberation and a deepening understanding of LGBT people, one can only draw the conclusion that the answer is full equality.  While it can be difficult as a public figure to change course, I applaud him for taking a courageous and principled stand.  His experience wrestling with the issue of marriage equality and coming out on the right side of history will be an inspiration to millions of fair-minded Americans who are in the same place.”
